Next week you can expect the following activities in Salem:
- Continued activity on National Grid property on the corner of Ferry Street and Waite Street as crews work on the Waite Street substation.
- Duct bank excavation and conduit installation on Bridge Street, between Pierce Avenue and Essex Bridge.
Next week you can expect the following activities in Beverly:
- Continued manhole excavation on Broadway near the corner of Broadway and Rantoul Street.
- Duct bank excavation on Wellman Street, between Congress Street and Webber Avenue.
- Test pit excavation at the expected duct bank locations on Wellman Street.
- Test pit excavation on the corner of River Street and Pleasant Street at the expected location of the jack and bore receiving pit.
- Test pit excavation on at the expected manhole location Monument Square, between Abbot Street and Hale Street.
- Test pit excavation on at the expected manhole location on Hale Street, between Lothrop Street and Willow Street.
Please note that parking will be limited on Ferry Street, Waite Street, Peirce Avenue, and Bridge Street in Salem and on Broadway, Wellman Street, Monument Square, River Street, and Hale Street to allow for greater access for National Grid and its contractors.
In both Salem and Beverly, construction will take place between the hours of 7:00 am and 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.
This week, we’re excited to roll our project “Schedule-Map”, which can be found on the project website here, by pressing “See The Route.” This map provides the expected timeline for construction along the project route and will be updated as work progresses.
At this time, no project activities are expected during the week of December 26. Crews are expected to commence project activities on Tuesday, January 3, following the observance New Year’s Day.
At the expected manhole locations, abutters can expect to see the staging of project materials in the lead up to installation of the manhole. Portions of the street may be closed during staging, as well as during the installation of the manhole. Soil sampling, test pitting, manhole excavation and duct bank excavation all require the use of drills for removing pavement and rock. Additionally, excavators and vacuum trucks will be used for safe and efficient removal of soil. These pieces of equipment generate substantial noise that may be unpleasant to abutters. We thank you for your patience and understanding as we perform this vital work.
Test pit excavation is an important aspect of pre-construction activity, used to locate existing underground utilities that may not have been identified on plans or during past survey work. For test pitting at expected manhole locations, crews expect to take three to five days at each location, dependent on conditions. Crews working on test pitting excavation at duct bank locations will work along the route in a shorter timeframe.
