Construction Update: April 7, 2023

Dear Neighbor,

Next week, you can expect the following activities in Salem:

— Continued activity on National Grid property on the corner of Ferry Street and Waite Street.

— Excavation of a trench for the installation of duct bank installation on Waite Street.

Next week, you can expect the following activities in Beverly:

— Continued excavation of a trench in the street and on select sidewalks, for the installation of duct bank on Wellman Street. Work will take place at three locations:

Between Linden Avenue and School Street. Crews have excavated down to 7 feet at this location.

Between School Street and Webber Avenue. Crews have excavated down to 7 feet at this location.

— Continued excavation of a trench for the installation of duct bank at the East Beverly substation, on National Grid’s property off Boyles Street.

— Continued excavation of a pit for the installation of a manhole on Congress Street, on the intersection with Cabot Street. Installation of the manhole is expected to take place with the use of a large crane during the second half of the week.

Please note that parking will be limited on Wellman Street in Beverly and Ferry Street and Waite Street in Salem to allow for greater access for National Grid and its contractors.

Test pitting, manhole excavation and duct bank excavation all require the use of drills and hoe rams for removing pavement and rock. Additionally, excavators and vacuum trucks will be used for safe and efficient removal of soil. These pieces of equipment generate substantial noise that may be unpleasant to abutters. We thank you for your patience and understanding as we perform this vital work.

At the expected manhole locations, abutters can expect to see the staging of project materials in the lead up to installation of the manhole. Portions of the street may be closed during staging, as well as during the installation of the manhole.

As a reminder, there is an ongoing planned outage of the existing N-192 cable to allow for the safe excavation and installation of duct bank at locations where the existing cable overlaps with the project route. The overlapping areas are on Wellman Street and on National Grid’s property at the East Beverly substation. As such, work on Wellman Street and on duct bank within the East Beverly substation will take place between 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday, and 8:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturdays. The outage of the N-192 cable will not have an impact on power to the homes and businesses in the areas where work is taking place. For construction along the rest of the route, work will continue to take place between the hours of 7:00 am and 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

Crews will not work Saturday, April 8, 2023.

On Wellman Street, Webber Avenue, School Street, and Linden Avenue, a portion of the street at times may be closed to through-traffic during working hours. Residents will be able to access their homes and driveways with assistance from police details, crew members, and traffic signage. Traffic management for work can be found here:

Construction is scheduled to minimize the impact on traffic and everyday life. We understand that construction doesn’t always feel “short-term” when it’s in front of your home or business. As work begins in your area, we will continue to work to mitigate inconveniences that come up to the greatest extent feasible. Please let us know about upcoming deliveries, schedules, and events that could be impacted by work.

If you have questions about any of our current or upcoming work, please feel free to contact a member of our project outreach team by emailing us at, or by calling our project hotline 1-833-238-4743.

*Please note, due to the complexities of outdoor construction, schedule is subject to change
